6B. Will the Government be offended if we ask question about business?
Nikunu Yunupingu and Richard Trudgen
This program starts with a confronting question that shows the state of confusion that many Yolngu carry.
CNY: Yo, Wamut? (my skin Name )
RT: what is it, nephew?
CNY: “Nhawi like ah, ah, different Yolngu, in fact, all of us are rum’rumdhun (avoid, keep clear of, Because they are not sure it is, observe taboos or taboos required by common decency). Rum’rumdhun waŋana-raw ???? avoiding speaking to government. And we don’t speak to straight to them.
Like when we’re talking about business, many are like…gura, too, a shame, so they don’t talk forthright with them.
Most people avoid talking to the government.
Some people will talk straight to the government.
Yo – yes, and asked them what business is about and if they can get money to start up a business
It seems others are Marr dhumbalyun – confused or mystified. Or they are too gura, a shame maybe.
How is it with government (when we talk about such things) how is it? Are we offending them? Or how is it? Is the government ashamed or not?”
This podcast goes on to explain that the government exists to look after its citizens and part of its responsibility is to help businesses grow. Business is not a secretive subject. It looks at how Yolngu feel about short government visits to communities and what they would really like, as well as something Yolngu can say to encourage government to give them the full information on topics and projects. It explores the confusion that exists in many Yolngu communities about how government funding works.
