This is the first of ten episodes in the Tax Story series. Where Richard Trudgen defines the meaning of the word ‘tax’ and explains that taxes are compulsory contributions to state revenue – levied by government on workers income, business and company profits and also goods and services (GST). It looks at the European history of tax and its existence in the Bible and compares traditional Yolngu economic systems with the Balanda tax system. Looks at proportions of revenue raised by the Federal Government by personal, company and tobacco tax.
